Have You Chosen The Right Approach To Earn Money Through Blogging?

Earning money from one’s blog is a cool way to start an income and support your family. Lately, we have seen a steep increase in the number of blogs launching every year. I am quite happy to watch people, especially youths, trying to earn an online income. However, I am quite disappointed with their lack of knowledge on ways to earn money.

They think earning directly is the only option

It’s true that earning an income directly from your blog is a source of income. However, it’s not the only one and I can say, it’s the most unreliable one. A direct income is earned by selling ads, affiliate marketing, and having sponsored posts. There are many other ways to earn directly, but these are the common ones.

So what’s the problem with such income and why is it unreliable?

how to earn money through blogging

You can generate a recurring income form such sources and it definitely involves less hard-work to sustain. However, bloggers need to understand that it’s quite difficult to earn a huge amount from this recurring income.

There are various constraints that keeps you from earning big. However, the most significant one is TIME.

The amount of income you earn from your blog depends on traffic and traffic is attracted by writing excellent-quality articles which requires time, lots of time. Huge traffic is directed on your blog regularly only if you keep posting amazing articles frequently. Some bloggers do have a lot of time to write, but most of us don’t. Hence we opt for a quicker, erroneous method: The direct method. It is a good source of income, but it becomes erroneous when you start depending only on this method.

Professional Options for Professional Bloggers

I am not suggesting you to avoid direct income. I am asking you to complement it with some professional, indirect sources, which will develop you as a professional blogger. I am revealing some of the ways through which I make money.

  1. Provide Service:
They are numerous people seeking a service provider in the niche that you specialize in. Trust me, each niche has a market. You just need to search it. If you don’t have any niche, create one or come up with a new one. You can initiate any kind of niche. Just make sure you have some relevant knowledge about it.A very ordinary type of service is freelancing. You can start a freelance business for almost anything from web designing, content writing, cooking, lawn sevices, and what not. If you don’t like freelancing, there a various other options you can look at. Just remember to be creative. Think of how you can use your knowledge and provide service to other people. Done! You will soon start earning  good income from providing such service.
  2. Selling products:
Not everyone can sell quality products along with proving value to their readers. If you can use some great promotion techniques to endorse the product, I am sure you will earn much more than you expect. This is a very good source of recurring income because it once it has been set up, it takes little to keep it going. While launching your own product, remember that it should be useful to many of your readers and should be in demand.
  3. Membership Websites:
If you think you have the power to develop extremely awesome content, start a membership website. This site is an area accessible only to those who pay to read your content. There are many such sites that are generating millions of dollars. Some of these sites earn money by teaching to lunch a membership sites. So, their members have also started earning good income. This type of income has enormous potential and the market is yet not saturated. However, it involves continuous and serious effort to maintain and keep it going successfully.

Tell me your choice, or at least opinions

Now, this post definitely has something new, at least for beginners if not for everyone. However, which according to you is the best one among these three professional methods? Or, which method is currently working for you?

And I don’t intend to discourage those who are using ads as their only income. It’s just that I want them to do some thing quickly, before they quit.

Great article. All I can say is that it takes time to attract a huge amount of traffic. And in my opinion, you only need to have the passion to succeed, because if you have that, time will not be a problem; through time you will gain more experience and more experience equals more quality writing.

Rightly said Windsor. With time you learn the essentials of blogging. You learn more about your domain and understand what works and what doesn’t. And correctly mentioned by you, passion is the key that will drive you through. Great suggestion Windsor.

I usually don’t care an income is direct or indirect, I care more whether it is a passive income. The three ways which you list also need a lot of traffic. They are not for the beginners. For the beginner, affiliate marketing is the best choice.

    Chris,

First thing I did was to create my own products and allow affiliates to sell them as well.

    Then I provided services.

Now I am just about to launch my first membership site.

So I’m getting into all 3.

I also sell other peoples products/services BUT only if I have used/seen the actual product myself and it is of benefit.

Creating your own product can take quite a long time so for me it’s about getting the balance between blogging, marketing and creating products. Get the balance right between those 3 and you have an excellent chance of being a successful on-line business owner.

AND one more thing…it takes hard work and commitment…don’t believe the hype about ‘making quick bucks by blogging’

    Hi Andrew,

I think that’s superb. Having all three is what people just dream about and hardly few people reach that apex point. I am glad to hear you are one amongst the rare ones. Keep doing well. Very soon i will post few more professional ways to earn through blogging. I hope you establish them as well.

And yes, blogging is like any other work that doesn’t produce quick money. You definitely need patience, commitment, and rigorous efforts.

Thank’s for sharing your experience and secrets. Congragulations!

I have been very bad at earning money from my blogs. I am now seriously considering providing service to earn money.

    Thanks for strengthening my decision.

Hiya Chris, and all the best for 2010! May this year be truly exceptional and exceed your wildest expecttations! Thanks for pointing out that there are numerous ways to make money online, particularly for selling your services and expertise, and not just by driving traffic for affiliate offers.

    Hi Jacques,
I think it’s important for bloggers to realize that traffic is temporary when attracted by articles. And if you keep providing quality articles, you may have continuous traffic.

However, if you have taken up blogging as your business, i guess it needs a plan and a little more than just articles. The ideas mentioned in the post are great ways to start a business.

Hey, thanks for the wishes. Hope you have a woderful year ahead.

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for the great adivce and insight. I have been blogging now for over a year, but really blogging only the last 6 months. There is so much to learn and so little time sometimes, especially when I have a 2 year old at my ankles and don’t get a lot of time! :(

So far I have a product and I have my blog, they are not earning much, but they are earning something so I can see what can happen in the future if I stay motivated and focused.

Happy 2010! See you back here soon! :P

Membership sites do have unlimited earning potential but as you said you really need to be a master and deliver something truly awesome.

I also think that deciding on monetazation depends on the kind of blogger you want to be, do you want to become a famous authority, or do you just want to make money online? There is a profound difference there

Precisely. And this decision also affects the quality of content you generate.

To start a membership site, one requires indepth knowledge about the domain. Why would someone pay to join your site, if it has content that is freely available elsewhere?

Thanks for your valuable comment JR.

Thanks Chris, you have a great site here, not sure how I have not come across it sooner!

You are so right about the quality of content connection, lol, when I first started online, I took so much time to write all this “awesome stuff” for my little niche sites, then I realized how much time I was wasting and how little money that made me. Now I can slap up a good site in a day and it makes money, but on my blog, I take care with every word, because that is for my readers, and is not primarily to make money, though when that happens I don’t complain ;-) .
