If you want to be a good leader hire a person who counters your views. Well, you must be thinking I’ve gone crazy to say such a thing, but you’ll see sense in what I’m saying, a little while later.
Are you aware that this world is full of people who don’t think exactly the way you do? When I was a team leader at my office, I used to take pride in my knowledge and capabilities. People would simply nod their heads in approval to whatever I said. Then one day, a fresher came who pointed out loopholes in my outlook. Though my ego played on me, for a while, for taking tips from a new recruit, I saw sense in what he said and changed my approach. This saved us a lot of unnecessary hassles. This is where I used opposition positively.
You, as a leader, should always be prepared for challenges. You might be the king in your organization, but since you need to prove your mettle in the outer world, you’ve got to fight criticism and win over it. For this it is advisable for you to do some internal preparation. If there are people in your team who hold opposing views, encourage them to express their views. This will help you in knowing the kind of criticism you might have to face in the outside world and get yourself ready for countering it. Don’t get disheartened by criticism. Carefully mark what the other person has to say and use these as leads for rectification.
When hiring people who differ from you, be prepared to take in some ideas which might irritate you. Be sure to not intimidate the person from expressing himself because if you do so, you’ll lose valuable viewpoints that you might have to get prepared to answer. Rather give your opponent the support to speak out his mind freely because this will not only expose the validity of your judgment, but also clarify your thinking.
If you want to hire people with opposing mindsets, just follow these basic guidelines:
- Assess if the opposing views are worthwhile. If someone just opposes you for the sake of arguing then and his argument has not substance or does not seem to be more effective than yours, just forget him. He’s not worth your time and effort.
- Your opponent should come up with feasible solutions for the problem at hand. His views should be practical and effective in handling the situation at hand. There’s no point in hiring people who just counter your views but are not able to come up with any solutions.
- Look out for people with high aspirations for working for the welfare of the organization. They don’t contradict you to show their superior intellectual skills or to point out your faults, but out of a genuine interest to bring about a change for the betterment of the organization. These are the people who prove themselves in the long run. Respect their views and learn from them if necessary.
- Hire people with promising professional backgrounds. If you come across a person who’s stood against all hardships, such as, fierce competition, lesser resources or a radical change in the organizational structure, and emerged successful, this is the person you are looking for. Just get him, he’ll see you through.
- Never hire a person who’s opposed to you and not to your ideas. Such a person is dangerous. He’s no better than an enemy who has some personal grudge against you. He’ll distort things to satisfy his personal wrong motives and will put the company in peril. Just forget him or just keep him under control.
Whoever wins the argument, whether you or your opponent, just be sure that you, as the assigned leader has the final say, otherwise the rest of your followers will be confused as to whom they have to follow in future. If you find that the opposing view is producing better solutions for a particular problem, just accept that view with an open mind, commend your opponent for coming up with a nice solution, but pass the final decision yourself. Don’t let another person formally control your team.
Remember, accepting others views is not a sign of your submission to their intellect. No person is perfect in this world and no thinking is perfect. To err is human and a wise man learns from experiences and modifies his self to climb up a higher rung in the ladder to perfection.
