The founder of Apple Computers Steve Jobs was a man of humble origins and he used to do summer jobs at an apple farm in California. Besides this he was a huge fan of the Beatles whose official label is “Apple Records”. While teaming up with Steve Woznaik they both were at their wits end looking for a suitable name and when they reached a dead end in their brains they decided to opt for “Apple” This is how one of the leading brands in IT got its name. Although they did have to face violations issue from Beatles, yet they sustained and overcame the trademark issues.
The name Facebook was inspired by the colloquial name given to a set of books which were usually handed out to the students at the onset of the academic year. These books included the pictures of other students and were handed out with the intent to help the students connect to and interact with each other. This is exactly the essence of what Facebook can actually do and so the name struck a chord.
Twitter got its name in an unusual twist of chance. There was a small group of employees from Odeo from the San Francisco podcasting startup. This was where Twitter originated. This group was trying to zero in on a name which was zingy and apt. they wished to give the impression of a mobile phone which would buzz the update while it was in the pocket. They scrutinized several options before they narrowed down to Jitter and Twitter. It was here that they reached a dead lock and with the aim to break it, they decided to pen down both the names and put them in a hat. They left the rest to destiny. And that’s what we have, a Twitter.
Can you believe that ‘Google’ the word which is an answer to all our queries is the result of a spelling error? Well, lets begin at the very beginning. Initially the founders were looking for a suitable name for their newly designed search engine which they planned to call “BackRub”. However as its popularity and reach expanded they began to hunt for a new name which would represent the enormous volume of data. They speculated on the word ‘googolplex’ which they later improvised to ‘google’. However one of the Google founders made an error while checking for a domain name and accidentally typed in ‘Google’. As the domain was available they instantly accepted it and that’s how ‘Google.com’ came into existence.

Originally Hotmail was spelt as ‘HoTMaiL (the initials of HTML in upper case).
