Shakespeare said, “Whats in a name?” Well he would surely not have said so, if he would have known the efforts the founders of these IT giants had to put in to dish out a perfect name which would be the image of their brand and services.

Here we share with you the details of how some of these leading brands got their names.

1.    Apple:

The founder of Apple Computers Steve Jobs was a man of humble origins and he used to do summer jobs at an apple farm in California. Besides this he was a huge fan of the Beatles whose official label is “Apple Records”. While teaming up with Steve Woznaik they both were at their wits end looking for a suitable name and when they reached a dead end in their brains they decided to opt for “Apple” This is how one of the leading brands in IT got its name. Although they did have to face violations issue from Beatles, yet they sustained and overcame the trademark issues.

2.    Facebook:

The name Facebook was inspired by the colloquial name given to a set of books which were usually handed out to the students at the onset of the academic year. These books included the pictures of other students and were handed out with the intent to help the students connect to and interact with each other. This is exactly the essence of what Facebook can actually do and so the name struck a chord.

3.    Twitter:

Twitter got its name in an unusual twist of chance. There was a small group of employees from Odeo from the San Francisco podcasting startup. This was where Twitter originated. This group was trying to zero in on a name which was zingy and apt. they wished to give the impression of a mobile phone which would buzz the update while it was in the pocket. They scrutinized several options before they narrowed down to Jitter and Twitter. It was here that they reached a dead lock and with the aim to break it, they decided to pen down both the names and put them in a hat. They left the rest to destiny. And that’s what we have, a Twitter.

Can you believe that ‘Google’ the word which is an answer to all our queries is the result of a spelling error? Well, lets begin at the very beginning. Initially the founders were looking for a suitable name for their newly designed search engine which they planned to call “BackRub”. However as its popularity and reach expanded they began to hunt for a new name which would represent the enormous volume of data. They speculated on the word ‘googolplex’ which they later improvised to ‘google’. However one of the Google founders made an error while checking for a domain name and accidentally typed in ‘Google’. As the domain was available they instantly accepted it and that’s how ‘Google.com’ came into existence.

5.    Wipro:

Wipro the IT giant owes its name and carries with it the story of its humble origin. Wipro was made up of the words ‘Western India Palm Refined Oil Ltd’. This was the name when they ventured into the market as humble producers of detergent, washing soap and vanaspati. Presently Wipro has evolved and has become a leading IT giant. However, the name helps the company to remain grounded and never forget their humble origins.

6.    Accenture:

Originally known as Andersen Consulting, there was a brainstorming session where the employees suggested numerous names for the purpose of branding. A creative employer from Norway suggested the name ‘Accenture’ which was short for ‘accent on the future’. The name struck a chord and was re christened in the year 2001.

7.    Hotmail:

The origin of Hotmail is dripping with technology. Basically while trying to device a name for their newly launched mail service they thought of various names which would end with the word ‘mail’. Not finding anything interesting they finalized on Hotmail. Another reason why Hotmail struck a chord was that it included the letters HTML in it. HTML means Hyper Text Markup Language. Originally Hotmail was spelt as ‘HoTMaiL (the initials of HTML in upper case).

Adobe Systems: Adobe is known as the giant of multimedia software. However there is no creativity behind its name. Adobe was named after the Adobe Creek as it ran behind the home of John Warnock who was the co founder of the company.

8.    Acer:

Initially Acer was known to the world as MUltitech International. However in the year 1987 they renamed the organization and came up with the word Acer. Acer in Latin means ‘Sharp, Acute, Able and Facile’

9.    Skype:

The answer to numerous prayers, the one name which overcame all geographic barriers was initially named Sky-Peer-To-Peer. Feeling it too long and boring, the makers then shortened it by combining the words. They called it ‘Skyper’. Later, they once more changed the name and coined the term ‘Skype’.
