When we start searching for how to build links for a website, we get lots of boulevard that we can follow. Some of them show effective results, some don’t. After lots of hit and trial method, I found the way to build high quality links for a website.

Here are few link building tips for a website:

  1. Prefer quality over quantity of links:

It is always better to have quality links instead of quantity links. There are many attractive pitches over the net which will tell you like “get thousands of links to your site”. These are generally bad quality of links. Don’t go for that and as far as possible, try getting the quality links rather than quantity links.

  2. Connect to forums:

Try to utilize blog and forums effectively. It will help to build nice link for your website. Forums generally are best way to attract visitors for your site. Go to the most popular forums and try to get involved in a discussion in that forum and leave a link to your site below your discussion, this will help you out in building the links.

  3. Learn from competitors:

Try to know your competitor’s strategy  like which media they are using for online publicity? , which web directories are linked to their site? And so on. These facts can help you to build link for your website. You can use search engines for research. For example using Google you can find about who all are linked to your competitor’s site and you can start using those sites for link building. In Google you can use “site: www.xyz.com” and it will show you the entire sites on which the “xyz.com” is listed, this is one way of building the links.

  4. Know the page you want to link:

Few points you must ask before you link to any page.

    1. Is the page is indexed in search engines?
    2. Does page have “no follow”? If page have no follow then it won’t allow passing link to your page. You can find it out by pressing Ctrl+U in Firefox. If it shows CONTENT=”INDEX, NO FOLLOW”. Then it’s not worth to try for building link on that page.
    3. Web directories: Web directories will help you to create high quality links. For example you can use Yahoo directory for link building. You have to pay fees to register with them. But they are worth using.
  5. Email request:

Send a personalized email request to the website owner saying “I would like to exchange my website link with you”. You can get lots of samples on internet on “how to write link building Emails”. I generally keep all the information about the email sent, it includes URL, Person’s name, submission dates etc. Be polite while you send the Email request and don’t forget to follow up.

  6. Your website information:

When you are building link, don’t forget to give important information about your website. This will help the website owner to build link to your website.

  7. Old links are also very important:

You should make new links but old links also helps you to build foundation and help you to gain more trust.

  8. Consistency:

There should be consistency in increasing links on your website. Don’t think that if you have done enough to build links, you don’t have to work for more. Some links may get lost also. If you are successful, you should not be comfortable. You should have a thrust in building the links.

Building links is one of the most important factors for a successful SEO campaign. With the help of research and contacting other website owners in polite way can help you to build high quality of links which will help in generating a good ranking and huge traffic in the long term.

robots.txt file can be used to block unnecessary bots and thus free up load on your server/hosting.

Nice post. Robots.txt is also good advice!

One of the most important things you should remember when link building is that you should try connect with sites that are relevant to your own. Browsers, especially Google, have adapted their algorithms over time and now also examine link relevance. So for example if I’m a carpenter I’m going to want to try build links with other carpenters, furniture retailers, etc.Linking to something completly irrelevant is not going to bring as high a benifit.

Donagh : I agree with you saying totally. Also when you do irrelevant link building there are high chances of loosing site rankings. I have also consulted the clients whose websites were totally out of Google cause of irrelevant link building.

I find often that forums use “nofollow” for external links, and probably with good reasons too. But of course there are still forums with “do follow” links – otherwise, the traffic you will get from “nofollow forums” will be very targeted traffic from people actually clicking your link because they want to read more.

    Good article Chris.

Building quality backlinks is always the best thing to improve our search engine ranking, most of the bloggers who want to make more money would love higher search engine ranking. Between, I think the 2 ways link exchange doesn’t really help much on ranking, but 3 ways link exchange does. Also, I agree with you that leaving comment in dofollow blog is good, I’m going to make my blog a dofollow blog soon, I need to fix something before doing that. :D

    Regards,
    Lee

Links are what drives Google’s algorithm, and it is important to keep on working on getting more and more, from as many reputable sources as possible! Apart from trying to impress the search engine bots, you also need to impress the human audience you’re counting on buying into your offering, and this means that you should spend some time on developing social media links and hype too.

I agree with all of your points buddy. As far as Social media is concerned it is very much necessary these days to get in to it, without which your SE Optimization is not 100% complete. I have known many entrepreneurs on the internet whose online income is 100% from Social Media Marketing :)

It’s always important when using blogs and forums to leave good quality comments that adds to the discussion, not just some diatribe just so you can get the link. The reason for this is that leaving a good structured comment has a lot more value than a link back! It builds your reputation and if done properly will increase the amount of traffic to your blog.

Do-Follow Blogs must be considered for Commenting and writing Guest posts on high PR blogs will surely help.

Also, give links to get links. people often forget it!

However no need to focus solely on dofollow blogs. Many of the real high quality and traffic sites are nofollowed and you may still get valuable leads from posting comments there.
